Real Driving License Situations
Scenario 1: Studying abroad and need to convert your UAE license.
I have a valid UAE driving license, can I convert it so I get converted to other country’s license?
Solution: First, check if the country allows to swap UAE license. Later, you need a “To Whom It May Concern” (WIC) Certificate, issued by the Ministry of Interior (MOI).
Scenario 2: Fined for an expired license after a sponsor-related visa cancellation
The situation: My visa was canceled because my sponsor (e.g., a parent) lost their job, and I got an AED 500 fine for an expired driving license. Don’t you think the fine must be omitted since I had no valid visa at the time?
Solution: Unfortunately, this fine generally cannot be waived on those grounds. License late-renewal fines (AED 10/month, capped at AED 500) are calculated from the license’s own expiry date
Conclusion:
You can validate your driving license by putting some basic information on the MOI site.
You can also check traffic fines and black points online across all UAE emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
RTA website is used to find the information about your driving license issued in Dubai. It does not have a license verification letter. For that, you need to visit MOI and get an authentication letter from there.
Validity depends on age and residency status. For expats, your license is valid for 1 year if you are under 21 years, and for 2 years if you are over 21 years (first-time issued license). If it is renewing the license, it is for 5 years. If you’re 21 or older and a UAE or GCC citizen, it’s valid for 10 years.
You can check your UAE driving license with MOI, RTA, TAMM, or EVG, but to renew it, you have to be in the UAE because there is a compulsory eye test.
The best thing is to keep a physical card handy for critical situations; however, a digital card can still help in generic situations.
